✨ Varily's Creative Chats✨

I'm excited to introduce a new series where I'll be delving into the inspiring worlds of makers and creatives.

Let's kick off with the incredibly talented ceramist, Ineke from Studio Ineke van der Werff. I was immediately drawn to her work's minimalist aesthetic and striking use of color.

I had the pleasure of being Ineke's neighbor during Stockdagen in Arnhem, and during two editions of the wonderful pop-ups of Storytelling Design.

1 - Where do you find inspiration in your everyday life?

Most of my inspiration comes from the materials I work with. When working with ceramic materials the possibilities are endless. Porcelain clay for example is super shapeable but also has its limits and requirements. Every action, every touch can cause a different result. When porcelain comes out of the kiln it is forever transformed in something different. This transformation can create beautiful surprises and sometimes terrible disasters. Learning more and more about the chemistry makes it so interesting!

2 - If you could travel to any place for creative inspiration, where would you go?

I would love to learn more about the history of porcelain which means I have to travel to China and Japan. Here in Europe we’ve only been able to produce porcelain since early 1700s, while in China they could make it even before the Common Era! Porcelain is so deeply rooted in their culture, I would love to experience it from up close.

3 - What are you working on at the moment?

At the moment I am both designing a new jewellery collection as working on the durability of my company. With my porcelain production I also create trimmings. This is the waste product of the casting process. I am looking for new ways to reuse these trimmings to create as little waste as possible. The “STUCCO" tableware collection is made of 100% reclaimed porcelain.
